Chic Crochet Boho Belt

The Inspiration

I needed this belt in my life! During the week we had a heatwave here in Europe and festival season suddenly arrived – even though there aren’t any festivals this year. I didn’t feel like ditching my boho outfits so I created this Chic Crochet Boho Belt to go with my shorts. I will also be making a shorter one to cinch in the waist on some of my dresses! For those of you who have already made my Boho Chic Crochet Headband you can see that I have used the same pattern stitch here. I have just added more motifs and some plaited ties with tassels.

The Yarn

Instead of using Scheepjes Catona for the Chic Crochet Boho Belt like I did with the Boho Headband, I decided to use Drops Muskat in Natural. I am absolutely in love with this yarn. I cannot express how incredibly soft and silky this yarn is. It is made from 100% Egyptian mercerised cotton and it is wonderful to work with. It was so quick to work up this Chic Crochet Boho Belt because it is a DK weight yarn.

Buy it now

Stitches & Terminology

dc double crochet

Picot Make 1 double crochet, chain 3, then slip stitch down into the top of the double crochet. This makes a little bump on the top of the double crochet, which is known as a picot.

Multiples: The pattern stitch needs multiples of 12sts + 1, plus 1 for the foundation chain.

This means that if you want to make a custom size then chain in multiples of 12 until the length is long enough. Then chain 2 more.

Choosing a Size

Choose a size from the table above based on your own hip measurements

Hip Length

  • The length of the belt around your hips is determined by how many motifs you make. Each motif requires 12sts. If you want to make a custom size then chain in multiples of 12 (12, 24, 36, 48 and so on) until the chain fits around your hips. Then add 2 more chains. You could also add or subtract 12 chains from the listed amounts in this is easier for you

  • There is approximately 1cm – 2cm of positive ease for each size according to the charts above (if you have the same gauge). For example, if you choose to make for size S the total length of the main part of the belt (not including the ties) will be 97.5cm. If this will be too loose for you then go down to size XS. When you add the ties on either end this will give some extra length to the main panel if you need it.

  • You can decide how long you want the ties to be dependent on your own height. I chained 65 for each tie for the sample belt and each tie was 28cm after plaiting (excluding the tassels).

The Tassels

  • You can watch this You Tube video HERE by Red Ted Art for instructions on how to make the tassels.

TIP: Waist sized belts

  • You could also make the belt to cinch in your waist when wearing a dress. Measure your waist and see which measurement on the above charts is closest. You can use this to make a smaller belt.

The Pattern

The sizes are listed in the following order in the foundation chain (FC) instructions:

  • Children: 6- 7yrs ( 8- 9yrs, 10 – 12yrs, 13– 14yrs)

  • Women: XS (S, M, L, XL, 2XL)

FC Children: Chain 110 (122, 134, 146)

Women: Chain 146 (158, 170, 182, 194, 206)

To end row 3 you can: (A) can slip stitch around to the left of the rows to join back with the first chain of the foundation chain (identify this by its tail), or (B) yarn off and weave in end. Turn you work upside down and yarn on at the first chain of the foundation chain (you can identify this by the tail).

Un-plaited ties on the Chic Crochet Boho Belt

The Plaited Ties

The ties are made by plaiting three rows of chains together. Place one end of the belt on a flat surface in front of you with the short end facing upward where you will yarn on to begin making the first plaited tie.

Yarn on directly into to the middle stitch. Chain until you have the desired length. Yarn off leave a long tail. The sample piece had 65 chains which became 28cm long after plaiting (excluding the tassel).

Yarn on into the stitch to the left of the middle chain and make the same amount of chains as the middle chain. Yarn off.

Yarn on into the stitch to the right of the middle chain and make the same amount of chains as the middle chain. Yarn off.

Plait the rows of three chains together.

Repeat these instructions on the other end of the belt to make the second plaited tie.

The Tassels

Make two tassels and attach to the end of both ties. The sample piece has two short tassels wrapped around 2 rather than 3 fingers. You can watch a You Tube video HERE by Red Ted Art for instructions on how to make the tassels

When you make the tassels, you need to tie a long piece of yarn around the yarn you have wrapped around your fingers (see the video). Make sure you make this piece of yarn long enough because you can use it to attach the tassels to the tails left over from the plaited ties.

Weave in the loose ends at the top and bottom of the plaited ties. Make sure to do this very securely where you yarned on at the main panel of the belt. If you do not do this the ties might come off when the belt is being worn.
